Day 195 - Questa Notte

A little bit of the same style as yesterday to Questa Notte by Ludovco Einaudi. Ludovico Einaudi is probably in the top ten of the words and phrases I have typed this year, but I do enjoy dancing to his music.  And I believe that Luna is on a mission next year to learn another of his compositions so hopefully we will be working on something together. Happy New Year everyone, I hope you have fun things planned for tonight; see you in 2014 :)

Day 194 - First Circle

I'm always on the look out for new music to dance to so today's choice comes from a fellow 365'er.

Day 193 - Rehearsal prep

OK lets just imagine the last week didn't pass me by or it was a holiday or something.  Not going to let it get the better of me, onwards!

With a week until my next rehearsal I had a play with the next section of the choreography.  Needs work (and more space) but I have a few ideas :)

Day 192 - Fourth Rehearsal

Fourth rehearsal today and the last one before the holidays.

I am very proud of how well Laura worked and improved today.

It was a shame not to have any of the others but it's so close to Christmas; so we had a good polishing session and learned the new section.

I'm planning to get the layout and positioning worked out (roughly) over the break so that, hopefully, I can have everything set at the first rehearsal in 2014.

Day 191 - Cat's Cradle

Marking the Winter Solstice and welcoming the longer days by playing epic games of Cards Against Humanity and Pictionary, with an interval of a group game of Cat's Cradle.

Many thanks to Lappo for filming

Day 189 - New Bit

Further to yesterdays run through of the whole piece so far here is a better clip of the new section.  And by better I mean the jumps are higher, the timing it more accurate and there is an extra few moves added on to the end which form the transition into the next section.

Day 188 - Solo Rehearsal

Before and after the last ballet class of term yesterday I spent some time working out the next section of choreography for my piece.

Some of you with a keen eye will see that I have used this phrase of movement before.

I really like the flow of this section and was delighted to find that it not only fit to this piece of music but that it also captured the rise and fall and flow I was hoping for.

Here is the whole piece so far with the new bit added on, you just have to imagine six people instead of just me. Well actually you'll only imagine for another 29 days!

Day 187 - Surprise Pointe

After my rehearsal on Sunday I also had one for Kathy's, our lovely dance teacher, piece for the show in January.  I was blissfully unaware that this ballet piece was en pointe.  Not really a problem but I wasn't mentally prepared. It's a lovely piece, with some of my cast, using scarfs.  There's a section in it where I have a little solo which I have the strangest feeling that Kathy would like me to put something together for, it's only about 15 seconds. So here is a little play with pointe shoes and scarf.  I think I may need to put these on everyday til the show to ensure I'm ready.

Music = Solveig's Song - Peer Gynt-Suite No 2 by Edvard Grieg (this is not the music for the piece but a nice alternative for my purposes)

Day 186 - Third Rehearsal

What a great rehearsal yesterday.  Many thanks to Alex, Sophie and Martha for all your hard work.  With one rehearsal left before the Christmas break, and at least two more after, I'm very happy with the progress.  Yesterday we worked on the beginning and a couple of linking sections and of course taught Martha the majority of the movement material, again thanks to Alex and Sophie for showing her some of this in their own time. My homework for the next week is to get the next section, which is the big chorus, choreographed ready for Sundays rehearsal and then we're nearly there.  The ending will still need to be worked but I'm holding off until it is clear where everyone will be so that it is a natural ending.  Location and spacing will have to wait until I have either more of the cast to work with at one time or are in the bigger studio, both would be preferable, but we'll see.

Day 184 - Floor Section part 3

Another alternative for the floor section piece.  With all of these different versions being performed at the same time I am keen to have some repeating elements across the group.

Day 182 - Floor Section part 1

In preparation for Sundays rehearsal over the next few days I will be setting different movement material for the beginning section on the floor.  I am hoping that these will be a good starting point for the girls to really get into the flow of this section.

Day 181 - Facing the Fear

After making my way down these stairs at an undesired pace last week I thought I should attempt to conquer the little tremors I have in the pit of my stomach and do so at my own pace.  Many thanks to Nat for filming :)

Days 172 to 178 - Including Second Rehearsal

I'm trying very hard to to be annoyed with myself about the last week but it's just so disappointing.  I managed to fall down the stairs at home on last Monday and I'm rather bruised.  Haven't been able to sit down comfortably all week let alone dance.  I have been mentally choreographing and planning for my second rehearsal, which was yesterday, so here is what I've been up to.

Music = Smother by Daughter

OK so I've decided on the music and even choreographed over a minute of it with my lovely cast last Sunday. Since then I have been breaking down the music into sections to make a plan of the dance:

I am hoping to ensure that the speed, difficulty and energy of the movement material echo the rise and fall of the song.

 Day 178 - Second Rehearsal

I was apprehensive about how this would go as I haven't been dancing all week but all was fine apart from forgetting I was bruised and demonstrating a roll up of the floor, ouch!  There are now two sections of movement material choreographed with the aim to split up into smaller groups and work on the direction these will face.  Charlie joined us for rehearsal and Sophie was away so I still had four lovely people to work with.  Next week Martha will be coming along too so I am leaving teaching Charlie the whole of the first section until then so I can show them together. The beginning and middle parts of the video still have work to be done and the placing is no where near the finished product as there will be six bodies in the space.  I am planning on videoing some of next weeks rehearsal with the aim to put this in the video to be projected on the back wall.  Still need to check that the projector works and will work in the space.  Looking forward to the next stage of this piece :)

Day 171 - First Rehearsal

I am so very happy with how rehearsal went today.  Big thank you to Alex, Sophie, Hollie and Laura (from left to right) for picking it up so quickly.  We have a lot to get done in the next 6 weeks! but this is a promising start.  I'm looking forward to welcoming Martha and Charlie into the fold next week; when amongst other things we will be looking at rolling and getting up off the floor :)

Day 170 - Pre-Rehearsal

With so many idea going through my head ready for rehearsal tomorrow I had to get some of them out.  There are a few things not explored in this little taster which need more room so I'm hoping we are in the big studio tomorrow.

Day 169 - A Bit of Evolution

I haven't visited my Daft Punk Evolution project for a bit, while preparing for the start of rehearsals on Sunday.  So today I popped the music on and see what just came to me.  Here is a short excerpt from the 1960's section.

Day 168 - More Yanni

The music search continues but I plan to make my decision tomorrow.  I have ideas for each of the tracks, I just need to decide which I'm more excited about and ready for.

Choreography 365: Day 167 - with Luna

In keeping with my search for music for my piece for the January show, the list is getting quite long now, I asked the lovely Luna to play something for me.  She is currently reteaching herself (got to love that) One Man's Dream by Yanni.  The sound quality is a little poor from a recording point of view and the video a little dark but we had fun, all-be-it rushed.  Hopefully there will be more like this in the future :)

Choreography 365: Day 166 - Culmination

Today feels like a breakthrough.  All the little bits and pieces I've been throwing out over the last few weeks seem to have led to today.  I want to do something beautiful for the January show and with my first official rehearsal on Sunday I am happy to take this along.  Music is still a decision to make but today has helped.

Choreography 365: Day 164 - New-look Studio

Using the improved space as promised yesterday.  It took some playing around with camera position in relation to the adjusted space.  This has giving me a couple of ideas about how to improve the space even further and also made me aware of where the wobbly floorboards are!

Music = Mudmen by Pink Floyd

OK so apparently blogger is having a bad day and wont upload, here is the YouTube upload but no sound.  Hopefully I can rectify this soon.

Choreography 365: Days 162/3 - (Busy Bee)

OK so blogging on time isn't my strong suit but I have been busy.

Friday saw me completely move round our second living room/games room/dance studio which carried over to Saturday.  It has become a usual haunt for me recently and most likely will be over the winter months.  To give my enthusiasm for this project a new lease of life I wanted to make this a more comfortable working and social space; hope my housemates approve! Here are some before and after shots, a dance in it planned for tomorrow (Sunday).

Today I made my winter warmer soup, curried parsnip. Still in keeping with the sped up everyday activities film sections (tbc) planned for the January show: here is a condensed how to.

Choreography 365: Day 160 - Alternative Music

Although I would like to use 'Smother' by Daughter for the January show I also want to prepare some alternative choices so that I can discuss these with my cast.  It's ultimately my decision of course but I'd like to have their input.

Unfortunately for some reason my editing software wont let me import this track so the sound is a bit raw.

Choreography 365: Day 159 - Catch up

OK so I had a mini fail this last week.  My last post was on Tuesday and after that everything got a bit hectic with interviews, college and a masquerade ball including filming.  So apologies to all, including myself.  Onwards!

I have been thinking a lot about ideas for the 'Smother' piece.  While listening to my housemate playing a beautiful improvised piece I came up with some interesting ideas for how to shape the whole piece with and without the use of film.

I have another workshop session this Friday so it is my plan to have a few motifs ready to be taught by then.

Choreography 365: Day 158 - 'Smother' continued

Today I wanted to play with the feel of the piece and add that into the melting pot of inspiration.  This is one of the things I covered in my workshop last week; finding the flow through the music.

Choreography 365: Day 157 - 'Smother' prep

I am considering the idea of making the piece I am planning on doing to Smother by Daughter (see day 145) the film element for the January show choreography.  One of the visual ideas I have been thinking about is to collect footage of myself, friends and family and my cast doing everyday things and then adjusting the speed etc.  This will be interspersed with some of the choreographic themes we are working on in the workshops; which will also be performed live at the same time.

Today's video is a tester for this idea.  My lovely housemates and I sat down to a fantastic roast dinner tonight so here we are just about to sit down.

Choreography 365: Day 156 - Sunday Jazz

Just an improvisation today using the music from Tea Lights yesterday: 'Round Midnight by Miles Davis.

I have about two weeks until my next session with my cast; oh that's exciting to say :) So expect to see ideas forming and either being rejected or manipulated during that time. I don't want to give too much away though!

Choreography 365: Day 155 - Tea Lights

After a very danced filled week and doing my first class observation today A cup of tea was well deserved.  I say 'A' cup but this week has definitely been tea fulled!  While sitting having my 100th cup for the week I noticed the way the overhead light moved on the surface of the liquid.  Not body choreography but that of light today.

Choreography 365: Day 154 - Post Workshop

The workshop went incredibly well and it was so much fun that I forgot to ask the girls if we could record them dancing for the blog.  But we have three more session lined up before the end of the year to really get stuck into the choreography, hopefully I'll have a chance then. SO for today you've just got me.

Choreography 365: Day 153 - 147 finally

I got a bit picky over the composition for this so I had to just get it done and move on.  I like some of the elements but that's about all.

Choreography 365: Day 152 - Workshop prep

I've been working on my lesson plan for the workshop on Friday.  To get as much creative work done as possible in the time I'm putting together a short continuous warm-up.

This is a variation on an exercise I've done in almost every contemporary dance class (Humphrey, Limon or release based) with a bit of sun salutation thrown in for good measure.

The plan will be to do this a different speeds to warm-up the muscles and improve flexibility and musicality.

More planning to do tomorrow and during the day Friday, hope you don't get bored.

Choreography 365: Day 151 - After Ballet

With the prospective choreography for the January show in mind I had a dance in the studio after class today.  I was also asked to teach the Friday workshop this week to work with the the first years, see who would like to be involved and what direction to take the piece in. Very much looking forward to this but lots of preparation to do; watch this space.

Choreography 365: Day 150 - 147 part 2

Ok so this is taking more time that expected, and I'm trying not to be a perfectionist about it but there's some long winded editing needed tomorrow to get to where I want to be.

Hopefully it will work, but for now; bed!

Choreography 365: Day 149 - 147 part 1

I meant to do this on day 147 but Halloween got in the way.  It's taking a bit of time to put together but I had lots of fun filming today.  Here's a picture showing all the clothes I ended up wearing for this; it might give you a clue.  Video up tomorrow :)

Choreography 365: Day 148 - Come As You Are

I thought I'd do some more towards my Daft Punk Evolution project today.  I had a little search for some era specific music and got to Nirvana and stopped :)
